Am I Working Fast Enough?

Daily Reflections #8

I am most productive between the hours of 3pm to 8pm. Today, that productivity was spent attending a recruiting event from Google. Thinking of fulltime prospects after graduation, I'm faced with the big stress: finding employment that will ultimately be satisfying...or at least pay for my student loans.

The name of the game is to simply plan ahead. Right now, in July, there is a full 5 months before the winter break in December, where I expect to complete a majority of my applications. If I want to remain competitive, I need to plan ahead. This means taking into consideration the length of time it would take to practice software interviews, complete coding exercises, generate enough content for my portfolio, and still complete my senior year projects within that allotted time.

As someone majoring in game development, I likely will create team-scoped pieces that can stand on their own - I can save time in the future by preparing my portfolio from now. (This means, it needs to be quick and easy to add pieces).

At the same time, I'm interested in a couple of different fields. My UI/UX portfolio might benefit from having the full projects displayed, but, the actual interaction with my digital presence needs to be mapped out well in advance.

You might have realized that this article in itself is also an attempt to document this process of thought. Can't get a job if I haven't marketed my skill - it takes time to build a network.

From here, it's a matter of reading and preparation. Tonight, I'll probably take the time to finish mapping out this long term plan. I've found myself hoping and thinking of the future; I read somewhere that people who can envision themselves as growing old are more likely to save for retirement.

Well, if that's the case, I see myself scaling up and branching out. I'm making a promise to never have one single avenue to the money I need to support my aging mother, my siblings, and myself. I'm the eldest sibling, so that means I need to create paths that my family can take in order to get the support that they need.
