Senate Leader to Legalize Hemp in the US
The top Republican in the U.S. Senate wants to legalize hemp. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell introduced a bill on Thursday, April 12, that would remove federal barriers to hemp, which is derived from the cannabis plant but, as a non-psychoactive substance, can’t get someone high.

The U.S. hemp industry grew from 3,933 acres planted in 2015 to 9,649 acres planted in 2016. Acreage increased nearly 150% with Colorado, Kentucky and Oregon leading cultivation on a state by state basis. But how did we get here? There is a long history of hemp cultivation in the U.S. with it being used for fiber, oils, and foods. Then, in the early 1900’s, restrictions began being put in place leading to the criminalization of the cannabis plant, or marihuana, as the authorities liked to call it. This ultimately ended hemp cultivation by requiring a tax on cannabis, from which hemp is derived, that was impossible to obtain. Technically, you had to break the law to get the tax stamp required to obey the law.
During this time hemp became defined by its lack of THC, which separated it from marijuana known for its psycho-activity, and thus allowed countries to grow hemp, exempting it from national and eventually international drug laws. After leading the way to abolish or replace hemp as an industrial agricultural commodity, the U.S. is finally taking steps to re-open hemp cultivation.
