How Knowing Your Sleep Chronotype Can Boost Your Success and Happiness

Are you a bear, dolphin, wolf or lion?

The standard narrative around sleep and productivity goes something like this. When you wake up before dawn, jump out of bed with the vigor of a 6-year-old on Christmas morning, and tackle your most important task before breakfast, you will be a success and achieve all your goals with ease.

On the other hand, if you sleep past 09:00 am, enjoy a lazy morning, and get going only after your friends call it quits for the day, you are a lazy bum. You will be forever chasing your dreams, never realizing them.

Let me tell you a secret.

Being a morning or evening person doesn’t matter for success.

The truth is how you use the time you are awake is what matters.

When you know which times of the day you are the most productive, you can schedule your life for maximum creativity, happiness, and success.

And despite what many productivity gurus and their followers like to preach, there is no best time in the day that works for all of us to do our most important work.

Instead, when you are your most creative and productive depends on your chronotype — your unique body clock that determines when you naturally wake up and get tired.

You are most likely familiar with the classic definition of being a night owl or a morning lark and possibly identify with either.

Chronotypes were first studied in the 1970s and describe a person’s natural sleep schedules and energy fluctuations throughout the day.

Because of this genetic component, sleep experts agree that you shouldn’t try to change your chronotype on purpose. Doing so will likely result in a lack of energy, sleep, and lower feelings of happiness.
