Can anything positive for our faith come out of events in the Capitol?

I have largely steered clear of politics in my postings because I believe that cruciform theology sits above and should guide our politics rather than the other way round. There are people of both liberal and conservative political persuasions who subscribe to the ideas of cruciform theology and my posts are meant to be welcoming to all who are interested and willing to discuss with an open mind regardless of politics.

With all that being said, you might wonder why I would bring up events in the Capitol. The reason is because I think they are very important to the future of our witness. To put it bluntly, the US has 74 million people who voted for someone who has turned out to be a traitor willing to overthrow democracy and install himself as dictator by force. Of that 74 million a sizeable number are unrepentant and are sadly more than willing to see the US become a dictatorship provided it is their fuhrer who is in charge. That many of them claim to be Christians will have a debilitating impact on our Christian witness worldwide and I worry for the future of the US and the knock on impact for the rest of the world.

However, there is a positive that I foresee: there has been a cancer that has been spreading within Christianity veiled from general scrutiny for some time now. It has been hidden behind evasions and double-talk often backed up by Bible verses. My hope is that now with the events in the Capitol, it has been revealed in all its shameful hypocricy and that in that light, it will be destroyed and something Christlike can emerge from its ashes. It is a particular moment where the cruciform message has the chance to seed in places in which it could not have flourished before and I hope that we will take full advantage of this opportunity.
