The Heartbeat

How do we learn the heartbeat of God??

Often times to hear a heart beat you need a machine that specializes in picking it up, usually an EKG at the hospital office, or you can hear it from someone you love if you rest on their chest. You’d be able to pick up the rhythm that their heart beats pretty easily as long as you’re listening.

I have always found the word bosom to be so weird. Unrelated thought to this post? Not in the slightest people! For the record it is not a word related to meaning of that for Booties… Butts… or Boobies. It’s simply means the chest! Calm down now…

The Bible says in John 13 that one of the disciples leaned into the bosom of Christ at the table.

Quick break down for you:

The bosom is more formally defined as a part of the torso or chest that indicates kindness and intimacy.

Oddly enough, but not odd at all because everything God does carries meaning, the fact that this happened at the table is so essential to the story. To enter into one’s house eat at his table in that time was a HUGE privilege. The dinner table was a place of connection and fellowship.

I believe that is how we learn the heartbeat of God. We choose to hear that beat from God through fellowship. We choose to lean into set out moments of intimacy and closeness.

The heart of God for us is unrestrained and reckless. His heartbeat sounds nothing like the ones we may have heard before, simply because God loves differently than any love we have ever experienced.

It is so important to have this realization that God does not love the way that man does. Growing up, even in a healthy home, I had struggled on and off with not feeling fully loved and valued. I found that when it came to my relationship with God, I was attaching my experiences with man to his character. The hurts that I had experienced in various relationships, such as the one with my leaders or certain friends, placed a block in my belief system that caused me to think that God would hurt me too.

Truthfully, in order to remove this block that was separating me from true intimacy with God, I had to do the “cliche” things all Christians talk about. Time in the Word of God and prayer.

Its impossible to shift things if you are not willing to put in the effort to do so.

Without those two components, my heart would have never come close to matching the rhythm of God’s heart for me.

PSA: This is also not a one time thing you have to learn or that we ever end up 100% perfecting. This is a process that requires multiple moments of altering and fixing.

There are various moments that I can recall in my journey where I have had to redirect my heart to be on the same page with God’s heart and his heartbeat. Redirect is probably the kindest word I could use to explain a process that was more of a major risk heart surgery.

One of the largest moments of “redirecting” was in 2015 where I had run away from church and my relationship with God due to pain and hurt I had experienced. I was fitting the exact mold of a back sliding pastor’s kid y’all….. YIKES!! But after encounters with cops (wild, I know) and no ounce of hope in my being, I began to search for more.

It was in my search for more that I realized ONE of the most essential truths:

Unforgiveness, bitterness, unresolved hurt, sin, etc. can ALL shake us up a bit. We may be going over 120 bpm while God is chilling out at a resting 60 bpm. In other words, we may be operating out of crazy levels of stress or pain or hurt, instead of the peace and freedom God carries.

Jesus says in Matthew 11:30 “my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.” To me, that sounds like he had to remind us that he’s in chill mode and we need to stop running around in circles like a kid too hyped on candy or like an adult with too many jitters because they drank absurd amounts of cold brew.

Today, whether you are taking your first steps to learn the heartbeat of God or if you have been walking for miles in pursuit of God, I want to encourage you to connect with the one who gives purpose and hope. Allow yourself to be redirected by His love. With any kind of learning, it’s a process. Processes are filled with ups and downs, but stay the course and you will find the beauty and grace of God’s love for you. A grace that you will be able to operate from and not for…..

Praying that no matter what heartbeats you have heard before and regardless of what things you have seen, feel, or experienced, that the love of God will find you and show you the MORE that you were called for.
