How to be a Warrior for Childhood and Save the World

I spent an hour and half today talking with second graders about teeth; from lost tooth traditions all around the world, to the difference between incisors and canines. (Yes, we did this all on…

The discrimination we discriminate against

How many couples of the same sex have you seen publicly displaying affection? How many people you know are not heterosexual? How many times have you supported an LGBTQ movement? How many times have you felt bad for individuals who are discriminated against because of their sexual discrimination? How many LGBTQ rallies have you been a part of? How many times you’ve casually called your friend a homosexual to make fun of him/her?

These are just a few of the hundreds of questions you should ask yourself if you easily and comfortably ignore the plight of the people who are a minority, everywhere in the world. Words used to address people from different sexual orientations are used as abuse and to bully people. Religions have called it a sin and apologized to God for the ‘behavior’ of their son/daughter. People call this a disease and seek medical help as if they sought medical help for being a heterosexual. What’s depressing is that Alan Turing, credited for saving the lives of at least 14 million people was tortured, discriminated, and shamed just because he was a gay.

When it comes to their rights, the majority of the people are silent, this includes even those who speak up against injustice. This is evident from the number of times a hashtag, protest, or a rally is in support of the injustice against them. This is one of the many privileges that heterosexuals enjoy.

What’s the reason behind the people with the same sex not displaying their affection publicly? The society is at fault here. Imagine your reaction, if not yours then imagine the reaction of a group of people when they see someone of the same sex kissing. Already being banished by their parents, they find solace in their loved ones, and even then they have to hide from society.

I can’t contemplate the fact that there was a law that criminalizes homosexuality or same-sex marriage. I can’t even and I was so ignorant of this fact. Politicians have been criticized for many reasons but not one of the reasons is that they support this law publicly. (You can google search to see the names as I don’t want to make this a political post)

The people who come out are shamed by society, neighbors, friends, families, and even their own parents. People have lost their jobs because of their sexual orientations. Feminists argue about the discrimination against women in the workplace, which is the right thing, but what about fighting for these people? Their situation is worse than heterosexual females.

There are thousands of movies made every year and only a few movies are released where the protagonist isn’t a heterosexual. I’ve only seen 6 of all the movies I’ve watched. Also, the few movies that are made on homosexuals or bisexuals are made specifically to address their problems. No movie is inclusive of these people and that’s where the problem lies. One doesn’t put a kilogram of salt in one’s food when one returns home from the hostel to compensate for the salt-less food that one ate in the mess. It has to be subtle, not always but most of the time. If you portray something as different, people are bound to treat them differently.

One of the most important and trending things of late is depression and mental illness. One of the most important cures is to speak with freedom. Heterosexuals have that privilege, others, not so much. Already being treated as a disgrace by their families, friends, and the likes, with whom will they share their thoughts? Do they have the privilege of sharing their feelings on social media and not receive flak?

Heterosexuals enjoy roaming to places without the fear of being harassed, beaten, or killed. The same is not the case with the other kind. When a heterosexual is harassed, they can approach the police without being worried about being mistreated by the police or victimized by the law. When it comes to people other than heterosexuals, the situation is not the same. Even the majority of educated people are not even aware of the simplest of things as to what pronouns to use to address them. We, as a society, have failed.

A lot of reforms and laws need to be put in place in order to help the discriminated and secure their safety. This will be done by the people in power and hence our job is to elect people responsibly. What we should do is be empathetic towards discrimination and make their lives better. We should support them in their movements, rallies, and protests. We should be as inclusive as we are of heterosexuals and make our world a better place to live for everyone.
