Youth Suicide Is Still On The Rise

So is season two of 13 Reasons Why going to glamorize teen suicide again? The first season was focused and based on Jay Asher’s book but spoilers of season two reveals more explanation on Hannah’s death and finally the big rape scene. The big question sparks many people and that is “Will someone be responsible for Hannah’s death again?” There are also new cast members that will play a variety of new students and also more mature characters. A number of mental health professionals and suicide prevention experts and even school counselors have already voiced their concerns about the first season. I still agree that the show portrays false messaging and it does glamorize teen suicide still because there are quite a few concerns. The show’s premise is essentially a revenge fantasy, Hannah’s classmates care about her after her suicide, the show depicts adults, and it depicts Hannah’s suicide in graphic detail. Both the book and tv show showed Hannah Suiciding in different ways. In the film, she cut her wrist but in the book she swallowed pills. Either way it’s still a negative portrayal of attempting to suicide. 13 Reasons Why attempts to ignore issues like depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, even mental illness plays in 90 percent of all suicides. In real life this is both damaging to survivors of suicide loss and unrealistic to suggest that love and kindness alone could have prevented a suicidal person from killing themselves. While most teens can read novels or watch shows, like 13 Reasons Why and not have suicidal thoughts or behaviors as a result, not all can, said Schwartz, who is chief medical officer of the JED Foundation. In the meantime, parents should be aware that this series is not appropriate for young children, and there are themes and graphic scenes that may not be appropriate for all teens.
