The Scaling Up Effect

Have you ever taken out a glass or handful of water from a gray-looking or otherwise colored pond? When I was younger, I did that for the first time and was surprised that the water in my hands looked rather clear! How then did the pond look so colored? I wondered.

Now, after seeing this same phenomenon hold true in many facets of life and existence, and considering it more thoroughly, I dubbed it the “scaling up effect".

You see, what happens is that for the most part, we usually do not really appreciate the magnitude and potency of things while they are in infancy or in small quantities. Take the chlorine-treated swimming pool for example. You scoop a handful and it’s so clear. In your hand, the coloration is very negligible. However, in 20,000 gallons of water, those seemingly inconsequential pigmented particles give the pool such a vivid hue. Similarly, wheat is usually hardly distinguishable from goat weed just when the blade sprouts. A very small fault or stress in a brick is generally a non-issue. Now, get a million identical bricks and begin to build. All of a sudden, the stress points begin to magnify in importance, under the accumulated weight and the crack lines begin to show. The cracking building would eventually tear as it approaches the point where it cannot bear the strain, if no intervention is made.

Now, let us come to the realm of ideas from whence other things ensue. We can actually use the scaling up effect to test the intrinsic veracity and coherence of ideas. It can help us weed out some ideas that are not in line with truth.

A definition of truth is that which abides. Truth always abides. If a pound of gold is tried and TRUE, then it remains in intact quality, lustre, weight and composition for centuries on end. That is true gold. A true equation remains valid for all time t. Because truth is perfection, it is perfect harmony and perfect correctness. It is whole. It does not disintegrate or depreciate. And it is only that which has truth that supports life because life is truth in expression. Once internal coherence is tampered with, decay and decomposition set in and death is the end of that trajectory.

By the way, this is why mercy is the essence of truth. Mercy is what causes anything to abide eternally. Mercy covers faults and promotes life. Mercy is the constant regulator of perfection and truth in any system, which causes it to abide perpetually. Mercy heals and brings any system into harmony and truth. Once you remove mercy, the system cannot withstand, accommodate or correct for any miss or error. Reliable systems are very fault-tolerant. They can accommodate disturbances and errors and correct for them. Without this mercy feature, any system is unstable and will ultimately implode. If every error is responded to with condemnation, or as the psalmist said, if God should mark our sins, who will stand?

Back to using the scaling up effect as a crude test of the trueness of ideas. Consider homosexuality. Consider the functionality of homosexuality. At face value, one might argue that it is good for the practitioners, as long as they mind their business and do their thing. Sounds good. However, if you scale that idea up, what is the outcome? It’s really simple. What happens if the whole world immediately subscribes to the idea of homosexuality and lives accordingly? We will have a total extinction of our species by the end of the next generation! The idea leads to a total cessation of life, beauty and functionality. However, that may not be obvious by looking at a single random case until it is scaled up. At this point, the elemental chaos and entropy is brought to its full conclusion and we see the obvious result.

But truth remains in the realm of life and harmony at whatever level to which it is scaled. Truth abides. Truth has integrity. Truth has intrinsic coherence. Jesus embodies pure truth. Pure truth abides eternally.

Scale up your ideas and be honest with what you discover.

Choose truth today.
