May Christianity Be Maintained in a Scientific Age?

As the question goes, can we as modern day Christians maintain the real Christianity that Machen is speaking of in the introductory chapter of his book Christianity and Liberalism? This is something I am constantly asking myself, this being the idea of, is it possible for modern thought to be incorporated with being Christian. If it is possible, should we be pursuing it, or is it something that we are to be more away from than Andy Reid making the Superbowl? That is what I’m hoping to reach throughout the reading of this book, and this first post is here to address some initial thoughts I have while keeping the conversation going with Machen.

First, is the idea that Machen presents regarding the new world. He says, “Modern inventions and the industrialism that has been built upon them have given us in many respects a new world to live in; we can no more remove ourselves from that world than we can escape from the atmosphere we breathe in.” What a marvel! this being written in 1922, shows just how important it is we get our hand son it today. We can not escape the glamour that presents itself today with technology, plain and simple. So how do we adapt ourselves to it, where it does not poison the culture God’s living and breathing word brings, but encourages and benefits it. The answer, being a simple one that of course needs a more complicated than I can provide is just two words, God’s Grace.

We are to be different and stand out from the crowd of liberalism in the modern day, and we will fail. This is something that must be understood by all, that all fall short of the glory of God. But this does not help with the application of the original question regarding science and Christianity. Machen makes a point to mention what many consider the great humans of history. The magnificent artists, poets, philosophers, and writers of the past who we still study because of the importance of their work and the value we believe it brings, yet there is a large bold bullet point that can be attached here which Machen addresses, and that being the decline of these humans. We are getting dumb. As we age more and more into the 21st century, we are losing the brilliance that these men and women once brought. The INDIVIDUALS who once embodied pure and genuine intelligence and creativity have come and gone, and we no longer have the genius that many recognize we once had, and there is something that has also dwindled down, that being God in society.

In a week where New York has just legalized late-term abortion, it is clear we need God more than ever. Every day at work I interact with men of God who share this prayer. Is the idea that as we have removed God from society so have we removed the individual brilliance we once had farfetched, possibly. Is it possible, well of course, yet we can talk about it all we want, the idea is though we need action, and prayer is action. Once again, know that we will fail in pursuing this action, but know God’s grace prevails.
