How to improve your V60 brew technique

I will give you some tips to improve your brew technique based on my experiences and trials.

I will not say something like place the filter paper in the dripper and boil your kettle so on and so forth. My aim is here to share some small details that can affect your brew technique. Although it seems easy and affordable, V60 brew technique is a little bit hard to optimize your technique. Therefore, getting good results takes time, calculations and trials. However, by applying some tips that I will give, you can figure out how to improve your V60 brew technique.

First of all, people will say you should rinse your filter with especially hot water. But why? Because the filter is made up of paper which contains cellulose fibers and this will cause paper taste in your coffee. So, you should definitely do it. When you rinse the filter, water also should be as hot as possible, even more than brewing temperature.

Second, people generally say that the finer the grind the bitter the taste. However, this is not exactly true. You can change other parameters like pouring technique or water you used. So, how can pouring affect your extraction? If you pour too aggressively, the coffee will be brewed too fast, therefore your coffee will probably become underdeveloped. You can taste both bitterness and acidity. However, this acidity will not be optimal. It will taste like an immature fruit. For example, when you buy a specialty coffee, on the package, there will be notes that are written “flavor notes”. If you buy a coffee that tastes like peach, when you couldn’t brew appropriately, it will taste like an immature peach. Of course, this is not a desirable result especially when you pay a good price for coffee. So, folks. There is no exact recipe or pour pattern for every coffee bean. Every coffee bean is unique, even more so every roast is unique.

When you pour too aggressively, you will move some coffee particles to the sides and they will not be brewed enough. Therefore, your coffee will probably end up with a bad taste. So, be meticulous when brewing and don’t forget those coffee particles on the sides.

What happens when you pour too slow or too little? This will extend your brew time more than needed and this will cause your coffee to taste bad again. You can even tell by the smell that your coffee will taste bitter. We got used to hearing coffee is something black and bitter, but that’s not the case. If you brew bad, you will taste that bitterness. It is also rather related to coffee beans that you choose to buy.

So, what is the essence of brewing optimal? Trial and error. Of course, you will improve both muscle memory and brewing technique. You don’t have to waste too much when you improve. However, don’t forget that coffee beans always have the possibility to amaze you.

As a conclusion, the V60 brew method is a nice method for brewing coffee because it is a manual technique and also it provides you the ability to play with all the parameters to get optimal results. So, try to reach better and try to have fun with the brewing process. I think it is like a morning ceremony for me.
