Putting Consumers Before Corporations

Claire’s protecting Missouri families by holding businesses accountable

Claire has a record of getting concrete results for Missouri’s families — and she’s fought tough battles against huge corporations to stop them from taking advantage of folks right here in our state. From big banks to big pharma, Claire’s not afraid to take on companies that seek to take advantage of hardworking Missourians.

Last year Claire reached across the aisle and partnered with Senator Susan Collins to write a bill that would protect senior citizens from financial exploitation and fraud. She has also worked to provide ways for financial advisors to report fraudulent practices and suspected exploitation of our seniors to the proper authorities.

Claire has also launched an investigation into pharmaceutical companies to examine how they have fueled the opioid crisis. Claire’s investigation has already revealed the systematic manipulation of one pharmaceutical company to push their opioids on consumers, and the CEO of the company has been arrested. Claire’s investigation also found that some opioid manufacturers have paid millions of dollars to advocacy groups that lobby for policies that have contributed to the opioid epidemic. This information may never have come to light if it wasn’t for Claire’s investigation. Now she’s fighting to make sure that these kinds of payments are publicly disclosed and holding the pharmaceutical companies accountable for their role in this crisis — because no company is too big or too powerful to be held accountable for abusive and dangerous business practices.

Claire has also worked to keep credit card companies and robocall operations from exploiting Missouri families. When credit card companies started using abusive practices, Claire worked with her colleagues to pass legislation to protect American consumers, saving them an estimated $20.8 billion in 2013. And after learning that robocalls rank as the number one consumer complaint and cost American families an estimated $40 billion every year, Claire introduced legislation to crack down on illegal robocalls. It was that same dedication to protecting the people of Missouri that fueled her investigation into General Motors after a defective ignition switch in their vehicles lead to multiple accidents, including the death of a Missouri woman.

And Claire’s next big fight? Teaming up with the thousands of Missourians who support a free and open internet to protect net neutrality. Without these critical consumer protections, internet service providers would be able to censor, block, slow down, or slap a fee on any site of their choosing. Claire knows that the decision to end net neutrality hurts Missourians and threatens small businesses. That’s unacceptable and precisely why she became the 30th co-sponsor of a resolution that would reinstate net neutrality. Thanks to her co-sponsorship, the Senate will be forced to hold a vote on reinstating net neutrality.

As a senator, Claire believes one of the most important things she can do is protect Missourians from predatory companies. She’s fighting every day in Congress for more transparency, more accountability, and more opportunity for hardworking Missouri families. We’re proud of Claire’s record of putting consumers before corporations, and that’s why we can’t wait to re-elect her come November.
